Once the long-term potential of the resource
has been determined, recovery equipment installed and the
appropriate management system set up, resource utilization
is the final step for ensuring the financial success of
all activities. The utilization of landfill gas can result
in two specific sources of revenue:
- CO2 emission reduction credits
- Renewable energy
CO2 emission reduction credits
When
flared, methane contained in landfill gas is oxidized into
carbon dioxide. Considering the global warming potential
of methane is 21 times greater than carbon dioxide, simply
flaring landfill gas reduces greenhouse gas emissions
and can generate CO2 emission reduction credits which
have a market value. The Kyoto Protocol established flexibility
mechanisms, such as the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM),
enabling projects to generate carbon credits. The framework
for the implementation and development of CDM projects
was defined by the international Marrakech Accords in
November 2002. Since that date, Biothermica has seized
this opportunity for itself or on behalf of its clients.
Renewable energy
Based on studies accomplished with regard to landfill gas
generation potential and landfill gas characteristics, Biothermica
designs and builds landfill gas to electricity power plants.
